  Lace demonstrators will be set up outside; tent, table, chairs are not provided. 18th century clothing is optional, but encouraged.

  Once again, we have been invited to demonstrate at Old Sturbridge Village at their Textiles Weekend. 

  If you are interested in attending, please register.

  The event runs from 9:30am to 5:00pm on both Saturday and Sunday.  Once again, we will be located in the Bullard Tavern. Demonstrators can park either in the staff lot behind Security or in the main lot. It is a short walk from either of these lots to the Tavern. Cars can drive into the Village to drop off equipment from 8:00am to 9:00am, but vehicles need to be out of the Village by 9.15am. After 9:30am you may handcart equipment in by way of the visitor entrance. Vehicles will again be allowed on the grounds after 5:10 pm both days.

  Chairs will be available on site.  Food is available at several locations; however lines can be long and supplies limited, so you may wish to bring your own.  Window light and some access to electric outlets will be available (bringing battery powered lights or an extension cord is recommended). If you have any questions, please contact nelgmemberatlarge@gmail.com

• Viewing of Plimoth embroidered jacket

  Between 2007 and 2009, several members of NELG took part in a project at Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts to recreate an embroidered jacket from the 1620s that featured gold and silver bobbin lace trim. NELG member, Carolyn Hastings, worked closely with project leader Dr. Tricia Wilson Nguyen on the design of the bobbin lace and selection of the real gold and silver threads, which were commissioned specifically for this project.

  

  The finished jacket became known as the "Plimoth Jacket".

  The jacket was displayed for a time at the Winterthur Museum in Delware, and is now stored in the archive at Plimoth Plantation. You can read more about the background and creation of this fascinating jacket on the Winterthur website.

  We have a unique opportunity to have a private viewing of the Plimoth Jacket at Plimoth Plantation on Saturday, September 19 at 11am. The viewing will take approximately 1 hour and will be hosted by Annie Greco, Director of Collections & Staff Archaeologist.

  Registration is open to NELG members only and is limited to 20 people, so please sign up early to guarantee your spot! Members will be allowed to register one guest each, with a fee of $15 per guest.

  We have been invited to be part of Barnfest on October 10! The event is a fundraiser for non-profit "Fabric of Life".

  The event opens at noon and there is a community dinner, followed by music and dancing in the barn. This is their biggest community event of the year, where they will have a variety of demonstrations, mini-workshops and raffles.

  "Liberty and Union" celebrates the raising of the Liberty and Union Flag in Taunton, MA on October 21, 1774. This year's event, organized by Old Colony History Museum, will be held on Saturday, October 17 from 10am to 4pm.

  Please note the location will be the Sturbridge Federated Church (next to the Sturbridge Library). Attendees should enter by the double doors on the side of the church (on Maple Street). We will have access from 10:30 a.m., so please come early to visit with your lace making friends. Please register for this event so we know how many to expect.

  After the program, please stay and make lace together. This is an opportunity to share our work in progress and to get help from others. Those who are new(er) to lacemaking and need some coaching or advice will be able to sit with a more experienced lace maker for assistance. Please note, this is not intended to be formal teaching, but a way to help less experienced lacemakers.

  Program:

  • Determine our calendar of events for the next year
  • Decide on meeting activities for November (exchange motif or wrapped gift/potluck or lunch out) and December (virtual, opening of gift exchanges or maybe do exchange in February instead?). Have a "clean house swap meet". Do have any lace supplies you want to pass along, sell, or swap?
  • Carolyn W will teach a needle lace petal she designed for IOLI. All materials will be provided. Please bring scissors for thread as well as a thimble.

  After the program, please stay and make lace together. This is an opportunity to share our work in progress and to get help from others. Those who are new(er) to lacemaking and need some coaching or advice will be able to sit with a more experienced lace maker for assistance. Please note, this is not intended to be formal teaching, but a way to help less experienced lacemakers.

  A group of lace makers gathers in Connecticut to enjoy company, a pot luck lunch and, of course, make some lace.

  The meeting rotates through members' homes and generally takes place on the first Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm.

  This is our holiday party where we will have our usual gift exchange.  If you would like to participate in the exchange, please bring an inexpensive (no more than $10), wrapped, lace-related gift. 

  Our hostess will provide the entree and will ask attendees to contribute side dishes, salad, dessert, etc.

  Joan Brash will be teaching a Teneriffe Lace workshop, which is being offered via Zoom. Students will work this beginner motif during this 2-3 hour class. Please check out this YouTube video that shows many of the designs that Joan has created and offers as kits on her website.

  
  

  Please register if you are interested in attending the workshop. Attendance is limited to 10 people, and registration will close on November 21, so please sign up early. You are welcome to stay after our business meeting and watch the Zoom video from the meeting room, or you can join from home via the Zoom link. The Zoom link will only be shared with those who have registered for the workshop.

  The cost for the workshop is being covered by NELG, but participants will need the “Traditional Patterns” kit. If you are attending in person in Sturbridge you can order via the registration page and the kit will be available for you on the day of the workshop. If you are attending remotely via Zoom, you will need to order the kit directly from Joan’s website and have the kit shipped to you.   In the Victorian era, a truly fine garment wasn't finished with ordinary, mass-produced closures. Instead, skilled dressmakers created bespoke, hand-crafted passementerie buttons —exquisitely wrapped and embroidered to perfectly match a gown. We should continue this tradition!
