NELG Monthly Meeting (April 18, 2026)

Our meeting this month will be via Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed to members a few days in advance. Guests are welcome, but please register so that we can send you the link.

Program:

NELG member, Devon Thein, will give a presentation on historical lace "Ruffs to Ruffles: Lace in 17th Century Costume". Here's her description: "In 2003 I gave a PowerPoint talk, in fact, my first PowerPoint talk, to the Costume Society. This was a year that they were holding their event in the New England region and they requested New England content. It is a light-hearted romp through 17th century lace costume replete with art work and actual pieces of lace from the Met collection. There is also obligatory New England content, although that was pretty hard to cull, given the early dates we are talking about."

Oxford Historical Society Fiber Festival (April 19, 2026)

The Oxford Historical Society is once again planning their Fiber Festival for 2026 and has invited us to demonstrate lacemaking. If you are interested in demonstrating at this event, please register. The event runs from noon to 4pm.

We will be located in the homestead, and a table and chairs will be provided for us. Coffee and water will be provided for demonstrators and you are welcome to bring your own lunch.

CT Sheep, Wool & Fiber Festival (April 25, 2026)

The Connecticut Sheep, Wool & Fiber Festival celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009. The festival started in 1909 by the CT Sheep Breeders Association as a program "to promote the keeping of sheep in Connecticut" by visiting farms and eventually to a one day event held at UCONN. It has evolved and expanded into a premier sheep and fiber festival. This event is family friendly agricultural and learning experience for the general public as well as shepherds and fiber enthusiasts.

Olde Plymouth Day (May 16, 2026)

We have been invited by the town of Plymouth, CT's America250 committee to demonstrate lacemaking at their Olde Plymouth Day event. There will be some Revolutionary War reenactors, as well as demonstrations on wool spinning and clockmaking.

We will be outside on the historic town green. This is a rain or shine event, but in the event that it is raining, or if rain is forecast, we will not attend. A pop-up tent and table for our display will be provided, but we need to bring our own chairs. If you are interested in demonstrating, please register.

Lace demonstration: DAR Northampton, MA (May 23, 2026)

We have been invited by the Betty Allen Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution in Northampton, MA to be part of their year-long celebration: "Hands That Shaped the Nation" to commemorate America's 250th!

From 1:30 to 2:30pm there will be a presentation of the Ipswich lace mobile exhibit, as well as on-going lacemaking demonstrations. From 2:30 to 4:30pm, there will be a separate 2-hour workshop for members of the public to learn basic bobbin lace skills.

NELG members who would be interested in demonstrating should register.

Members of the public who would like the chance to learn basic bobbin lace skills are encouraged to visit the website of the Betty Allen Chapter of DAR to register for the separate 2-hour workshop.

MA Sheep & Woolcraft Festival (May 24, 2026)

The MA Sheep & Woolcraft Fair has invited us once again to demonstrate lacemaking on Sunday, May 24. It will be their 50th anniversary and the theme color to celebrate that will be gold.

NELG Annual Retreat and Workshops (May 28, 2026)

UPDATE Feb 1, 6:40pm: Holly's workshop is full

Our annual retreat and workshops will be held from Thursday, May 28 through Sunday, May 31, 2026. Once again, we will be at Mercy by the Sea Conference Center in Madison, CT. The retreat house is located on Long Island Sound and all rooms have a private bathroom.

Our teachers for this year will be:

Kim Davis who will be teaching Early Bobbin Lace
Holly Van Sciver will be offering all levels of Torchon, Bedfordshire, Bucks Point, Honiton, Russian, contemporary lace and more. Holly will also be our vendor.
Carolyn Wetzel will be teaching a beginner bobbin lace class for those who are new to lacemaking, or those who have been away from lacemaking for a while and need to go back to basics. This class will be subsidized by NELG.

Kim will also be our keynote speaker on Saturday evening, with a presentation entitled “The Emergence of Bobbin Lace: New Evidence and New Chronologies”.

Registration will open at noon on Sunday, February 1 and close on Sunday, April 26. Paid registrations received by March 15 will receive up to $20 early bird discount on accommodations and workshop fees. More detailed information is available here.

Our commemorative bobbin this year is from Chris Parsons. Please note that to guarantee delivery for retreat, the deadline for ordering a commemorative bobbin is March 1. Late orders will be accepted, but these will be delivered after retreat.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Single rooms will be assigned on a first-come first paid basis
Check in time is no earlier than 4pm for afternoon arrivals
All meals are generally served buffet-style; dietary restrictions can be accommodated
Class hours are 9am - noon and 2pm - 5pm on Friday and Saturday, and 9am - noon on Sunday
We are welcome to bring wine/beer to enjoy in the evenings, but no bottles or cans in their trash, please. We will need to take them home.
Checkout time from guestrooms is 10 am on Sunday morning
All guests are invited to remain on the property and enjoy the grounds until 4:30pm, common areas and gift/bookshop before check in and after check out

NELG Annual Meeting (June 20, 2026)

Please note the location will be the Sturbridge Federated Church (next to the Sturbridge Library). Attendees should enter by the double doors on the side of the church (on Maple Street). We will have access from 10:30 a.m., so please come early to visit with your lace making friends. Please register for this event so we know how many to expect.

This will be our Annual Meeting where we will elect the Vice President and Treasurer/Membership Chair. The business meeting will start promptly at 11:00 a.m. If you cannot attend, please send in your proxy vote which can be found in the May issue of the NELG newsletter.

After the program, please stay and make lace together. This is an opportunity to share our work in progress and to get help from others. Those who are new(er) to lacemaking and need some coaching or advice will be able to sit with a more experienced lace maker for assistance. Please note, this is not intended to be formal teaching, but a way to help less experienced lacemakers.

Bidwell Country Fair (June 27, 2026)

We have been invited to demonstrate lacemaking at the Bidwell Country Fair at Bidwell House Museum in Monterey, MA on Saturday, June 27. It's a pretty low-key event with a variety of craftspeople doing demonstrations, a folk musician, cider and donuts.

Demonstration at Nathan Hale Homestead (June 28, 2026)

We have been invited to demonstrate lacemaking the historic Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry, CT during their weekly Coventry Market. The market is open from 10am - 1pm. We will have access to the barns at 9am to set up for the 10am market opening and need to be cleaned up and off the property by 2pm.

Historic costumes are optional, but if you have a costume from the appropriate time period please feel free to wear it!

We have been invited to demonstrate lacemaking at the Gilmanton Historical Society, in Gilmanton, NH at their Flax & Farm event.

The Gilmanton Historical Society opened a small museum a couple years ago in a historic barn. They are putting together a collection of fiber and farming tools with local provenance.

Salem Heritage Days Parade & Festival (August 01, 2026)

We have been invited by the National Park Service to demonstrate at the Salem Heritage Days Parade and Festival. This event will be a celebration of Salem's 400th anniversary and America's 250th anniversary.

This is a rain or shine event. Demonstrations will take place from 11am to 6pm, but drop off for materials at Derby Wharf would need to be completed by 8:30am.

If you are interested in demonstrating, please register so that we can inform the organizers how many lacemakers to expect.

League of NH Craftsmen Annual Fair (August 07, 2026)

Prescott Farm Harvest Festival (September 26, 2026)

A group of lace makers gathers in Connecticut to enjoy company and make some lace. Please bring a brown bag lunch, and our hostess will provide tea and coffee.

The meeting rotates through members' homes and generally takes place on the first Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm.

We have been invited to participate in the 4th Annual Italian Festival being held in Rocky Hill, CT. There will be lots of food, vendors and entertainment, in addition to the Itallian cultural tent.

This is our holiday party where we will have our usual gift exchange. If you would like to participate in the exchange, please bring an inexpensive (no more than $10), wrapped, lace-related gift.

Our hostess will provide the entree and will ask attendees to contribute side dishes, salad, dessert, etc.
