During this weekend workshop, learn the basic techniques for creating bobbin lace and construct a sampler of lace stitches. If time permits, students will continue on to create a simple lace tape.
Lacemaking is an intricate and skilled craft that has been practiced for five centuries. Bobbin lace is a lacemaking technique in which lengths of thread wound on bobbins are twisted and braided to form a pattern. As the work progresses, pins hold the lace in place over a card pattern. Lace can be made with just a few pairs of bobbins or dozens of pairs.
Participants will be provided with the materials needed to create projects for the duration of the workshop, and may choose to purchase these materials if they so choose. Participants can also choose to purchase tickets which include ownership of a lacemaking kit in the price.
Instructor Kate Moore has been a Plimoth Plantation employee since 1995, and works in costume as a Living History Educator, as well as a modern artisan and Colonial Wardrobe shop assistant. Kate discovered bobbin lace through a colleague, joined New England Lace Guild and took her first workshop in 2012. She been obsessed ever since! Kate attends two to three lace making workshops a year, and demonstrates the craft as a modern artisan at Plimoth Plantation.
