Description:
Over this past year the COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it a profound shift in the way we connect with each other. Education, exhibitions, lectures, and conferences are all moving online and while it can feel overwhelming it is a brilliant opportunity to reach out to more people across cultures and generations. In the University sector webinars and lecture recordings have been a standard part of the learning experience for over a decade and it has also become a part of the textile world particularly in the knitting and embroidery communities.

Among other events, the 2021 Doily Free Zone symposium and lace camp will be entirely online; DFZ is an international symposium and workshop program about handmade lace in Art & Design which was first held in Italy in 2013. The symposium aims to foster conversation between lace makers from all over the world about the value of lace as a form of artistic expression and the workshop program puts these conversations into action, encouraging lace makers to share and expand upon their knowledge. The organizer Angharad will discuss the logistics of translating a complex event into a digital format, the advantages, and challenges.

She will also dive into other aspects of digital education including podcasting, creating online courses and the digital artist-in-residence program which she is launching in January 2021. When approached with a spirit of optimism and curiosity we can find a myriad of new ways to share information, preserve traditions and support artists even in these uncertain times.

Angharad Rixon is a technical textile historian specializing in lace and passementerie; her studies in Italy, Switzerland and Spain have led to her skills in a variety of off-loom techniques. Angharad lectures in Milan and Florence and consults for museums and universities around the world. She is the engine behind TextileSupport, hosts the TextileStories podcast and is the organizer of Doily Free Zone. https://www.textilesupport.net/
