Ready, set, go: enriching and promoting crafts with the CRAFTED project

CRAFTED - a Europeana Generic Services project - aims to support the transfer of European crafts to future generations by aggregating, enriching and promoting tangible crafts heritage.

 The first CRAFTED blog highlights our love for crafts: Lace, a Labour of Love explores the history and influence of lacecraft throughout the ages. If you can't get enough of lace, you can also peruse two related galleries: showcases of Bobbin Lace and Needle Lace.

It is with much sadness that the Springett family announce the sudden and unexpected passing of David Springett on Sunday, April 3rd. David's illustrious career in wood turning, spanning over 40 years, left an impression on so many within the lace making community, and we are thankful to you for the outpouring of condolences we have received.

As a family, we are devastated, and adjusting to a life without David's sharp wit and unending kindness is not something we look forward to.

Details of the funeral will be announced in due course. For those wishing to make a donation in David's memory, can we suggest that contributions be made to the British Heart Foundation.

They gave a table for people to show off their collections of things, or their hobby. One of the people displayed bobbin lace.

This is the kind of thing I'm hoping that we'll be able to do with the Ipswich exhibit around New England.

Collectors strut their stuff at 'Pop-up exhibits' at museum

Julie McKenna displayed bobbin lace.

“This is a lost art,” she said, adding she was excited at the chance to display stuff.

She said she would like to see more exhibits and give the collectors more time to show their stuff.

I have lured another one to lace making. This is the archaeologist for the city of Boston, who I've been bugging about the bobbins in Paul Revere's privy. 

He's making lace now.

We learned yesterday that our beloved friend, lace maker, and teacher Susie Johnson died in her sleep on Saturday night. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. More details will follow as they become available.

I just happened to go over there today, and spotted this announcement.

As many of you know, last summer we had to combine the old NeedleLaceTalk site with this site due to the rising costs of Web hosting on ning.com.  Those costs are about to go up again, so we have found a new home.  We have purchased a new domain which will be hosted on Epik.com.  Not only is the cost much more affordable for us, we will have much more control over the look and feel of the site and will be able to have content that just isn't feasible (or even possible) here.  The new site is at www.laceioli.org - be sure to bookmark it and be checking back as we move content from here to the new site.

In honor of our upcoming monthly meeting where we learn to make Dorset Buttons, spend some time examining these lovely buttons from a puzzle that I found while looking for other lace things.
