Poignant article in the Financial Times.

England’s last lacemakers are in a race against time. In lace country, around Nottingham, there are only a handful of people left who know how to operate machines that have run since the 1800s. Soon there will be none.

Oh, my--the shade on raschel machines....
•Mass-produced raschel lace, knitted rather than twisted, sacrifices the intricacy of handmade and Leavers lace for efficiency.

    Oh, and this:
•Mason once purchased a whole Leavers machine from a factory in Rhode Island.

That reminds me: I want to someday get down to the bookstore in Rhode Island that has the journalist's book of photos of the last lace mill there. I wonder if that author still gives talks.

That is a terrific and sad article.
